As the default 2.6.31-14 (and the 2.6.31.16) kernel didn’t seem to recognize the Function keys for Brightness UP/DN, I started to google around, and did the following:
Installed kernel 2.6.32-2 :
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/):

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.32-02063202_2.6.32-02063202_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.32-02063202-generic_2.6.32-02063202_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.32-02063202-generic_2.6.32-02063202_i386.deb

sudo update-grub

Changed /lib/udev/rules.d/95-keymap.rules:

Add the *R519/R719* part:

ENV{DMI_VENDOR}==”[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*”, ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}==”*NC10*|

Changed /etc/rc.local:

Add the following row ( before “exit 0″ ):

echo 130,131,132,134,136,137,177,179,247,249 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/force_release

FN-keys Brightness UP/DN are now working!

(at least on-screen applet and changes in /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD03/brightness )

…… THE SCREEN BRIGHTNESS STAYS AT THE SAME LEVEL

The following (command line) is WORKING

sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=42 (lowest level)

sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=FF (highest level)

using the following table:

(based on:  /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD03/brightness )

WARNING:

Experimentally setting the level to a low value (11):

sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=11

Resulted in SWITCHING THE SCREEN OFF…..

Had to reboot , (typing blind…..)

Ctrl-Alt-F1 – <username> – <password> – sudo su – <password> – reboot

to get the light back.
